The Government of Maharashtra has set up a number of centres
to sell vegetables which are cheaper than those available at retail outlets,
including local vegetable markets. The aim is to bring down vegetable prices in
the open market.
The vegetables are available at the Government centres at subsidized rates because the path is not having blockades of traders, commission agents, wholesalers and retailers. Instead of the usual route – farmer sells to trader who transports the vegetables to the wholesale market trader-cum-agent who then sells to retailers – the Government’s Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) is purchasing the vegetables directly from the farmer. Transport & wastage cost is factored into the fixed sale price of the vegetables which are sold at the Govt. centre.
